Theories
- Uses and Gratification Theory - Basically saying there is so many ways in which audiences can use a media product.
- Social Interaction - Talking to like minded people and building mutual bonds
- Fandom - Dressing up and going to events, cult fans (not fans of cults)
- Information - Gaining facts and a more rounded view of the world
- relatable - being able to relate to characters and the scenarios they are in
- Escapism - Escape from the real world and get lost in another
- Voyeurism - Looking into others lives
- Sexual gratification - Just watching something because someone you find attractive is in it
The white, young lady seen in this advert targets heterosexual, white middle aged women by looking like what they would dream of looking like when washing. This woman is seen as an idol by women reading this magazine and has the figure, hair and makeup that those would kill for. The male gaze, even when you use this soap, you will get male attention, hence why he is blowing a kiss, and therefore it is directed towards men. The model is an aspiration, saying you need to be a certain age, body type, look, colour to be attractive which is basically writing off the TA. The use of the ellipsis. It is beyond reality, the advert is actually missing a bath because it is not important, is is all about her and her appearance... and the soap. This advert can provoke discussions for the audience to talk about not only the models body, but also breeze soap. 'Because you're a woman' is a direct mode of address, it makes it relatable, even if the only thing in common with the model and the TA is the fact they are both women.
Stuart Hall - Theory of Reception
Dog - Audience
Arrow man - Producer
Frisbee - Ideology (beliefs/,messages of the producer)
There is 3 different ways in which you can respond to a media product
- Oppositional - Goes against what the producers aims where (hating the goodie for Example)
- Preferred - Where the audience go with the producers beliefs (liking the goodie)
- Negotiated - Where you agree with some aspects, and not with others
The ideologies of the producer is to raise awareness to those who spend an excess amount of money on things that do not need to that much. Adbusters is polysemic (many meanings). This is a stereotypical representation of Africans.
