Representation

Representation is a re presentation it demonstrates the producers ideologies.  Representation allows audience members to be targeted by producers and also allows producers to specifically target certain people for certain things for financial gain.  Producers use representation to manipulate a certain a certain group of people, using stereotypes, these help audiences to identify the certain characters.  It is also a shortcut for both the audience and producer, it allows the producer to save time, manipulating the audience to into change their beliefs to the producers one.  The reason the producer wants to manipulate and change he beliefs of the audience is to re write societal ideas on certain things.

THE STUDY OF REPRESENTATION LOOKS AT:

  • The Group, Place or issue on which a media product is focusing on
  • The Media Language that the media product uses in order to present the groups or issues
  • The ideological perspective about the group or issue being created within the product
  • The impact of this ideological perspective of the target audience
Stereotypical representations limit the diversity in a society

A Promo Image - images that are not part of the show but have been taken to sell the show

Press Pack - info sent to a newspaper to help aid with a review
Camille is presented as innocent, her facial expression
Delicate due to the flowers behind her
Direct mode of address allows her to build a bond with her and the audience
The blue and cool colours are symbolic of her death scene but also represent tranquility
The casting of the actor who clearly looks a lot younger then she actually is done on purpose
She seems moody and grumpy
Her hair is plain and her clothes are mature, all in all, dull
Her eyes are dead and the direct mode of address allows you to see her natural face and the fact she is made to look so pale corpse like.
in many ways she looks like a teenager

Claire Ségruret is seen as looking quite tired
A middle aged mother, she is stereotypically attractive - natural make up and making yourself seem as naturally pretty as possible
She appears to be middle class so therefore she appears to be attractive to middle aged people
She is not a stereotypical mother, she is atypical, she seems cold and mysterious
She is a hurt woman

Madam Costa looks very innocent yet troubled
She is another middle aged middle class woman
She is dressed quite trendy, looks as though she has a white collar job
Glamorous
She looks tired and quite old
She seems weak and childish, mischievous
Atypical representation of a woman

Simon is seen as stern almost angry
Older teen, approaching twenties
hegamonically attractive, tall dark and handsome
The leather jacket has connotations of rebellious
Dark hair - dark personality
Simon kind of takes the role of antagonist in La Revenant
This reinforces how there are particular ways to behave

Julie is a positive character as she does not succumb to sexualisation

The whole cast looks stereotypically French due to the anchorage of the title being French
The marketing of the promotional image resembles those films similar to and including Twilight
They are known as 'TV Ugly'
It is subversive of typical TV yet typical of cult TV
There is a binary opposition from the mundane looking cast, fantastical elements are presented in an ordinary world
They are all white, there is no white people in this promo picture of all of them
There is no non-white people in this picture as France are a lot less excepting of those other than white.  It lives up to the conventions of Horror films, Les Revenant lacks a token black character, the whole class are all universally middle class.
Symbolic inhalation, no black people, made as if they do not even exist
