Referential Code - Intertextuality
Woman magazine is conventional of stereotypes of women where as Adbusters is controversial. However, Adbusters is full of adverts but putting them in a negative presentation. Brands care about brand representation, companies pay more to have their advert not shown next to a sad or violent story so they won't have he risk of being associated with the story. Adbusters is trolling. It is legal to deface companies and mock their adverts but this adds to their controversial status. They also take a direct and uncomfortable mode of address.
Some pages in AB are completely blank with smeary words, it does not look professional, they want to criticise the prestien images in other magazines. ADBUSTERS LACKS ANCHORAGE. If something has many meanings, not just one fixed one, it makes it Polysemic. The layout is empty, mainly images and barely any text. The magazine has chapters which makes it seem like a book. The masthead changes every time, which means it can not establish a logo, an identity.
The caption 'Red Soles are always in season' is a sick joke symbolising that the soles of his feet are worn down and bloody, red, like the soles of Loubitins. we are positioned, looking down at the feet, of the black child in the red soil, makes us think he is in a country in Africa - Use of stuart halls's theory of stereotype. TheMes en scene of the advert resembles a UNICEF advert which is a referential code. The Mes en scene of plastic bottles functions as a symbolic code of poverty. There is gross inequality of income, some people are spending £900 on shoes, he is using plastic bottles as shoes, this is a criticism of people buying luxury goods for themselves and not thinking of others who are less fortunate
Adbusters lack of anchorage leads to a range of polysemic interpretations to the audience.
Shot type - Close up high angle, positioned as an outsider looking down, making us feel superior. The fact the picture is high quality but the brand is a top quality fashion brand it a binary opposition. We are positioned to feel guilty.
This image looks rough and poor;y edited, the resemblance of being cut out and stuck down. These two images represent freedom, the bottom one of the model, strutting her stuff on the cat walk, free and rich, where as the person on the top
is restricted and reaching out for freedom. This could also be criticising the fashion industry saying that, at the top is the trapped workers, they allow the model to earn money.

Commodity Fetishism
Commodities are things that you buy
A commodity fetishism is an obsession of having something that you wear that demonstrates your wealth, making you feel superior and accepted. Marxism is a far left policy ere the rich exploit the poor, everything we do is thought of by the rich to make the poor poorer
Shot type is a close up and we are positioned as an outsider, this is not sexual unlike the woman magazine for the soap advert. This is not stereotypically a woman. She is there to demonstrate how easily we can access water and how much we take it for granted. The fact the Zucchetti tap is £250 for something that just pours water out just so people can have the status of using the tap, the fact the tap does not even have the brand on it is because it is the quality that matters to them. Zacchetti's a high end luxury brand. This double page spread is a combination of things, the bath (which is shallow) so therefore is not sen as a luxury thing to do but is still using a lot of water. The women is not being sexualised so it is subversive. the focus is not sex, the focus is to realise what we have, and what we take for granted and to use the real luxury (access to water) wisely.
The world has loads of unanswered questions and is a complicated place but, the illuminati allows us to have answers to these questions.
The composition of the "Save the Planet; Kill yourself" is empty, which functions as a symbolic code of misery. There is no use of colour or illustration, the only colour is black and white which symbolises isolation and that it is just plain fact, straight to the point, the two colours are also a binary opposites. The masthead's faded black and white represents toxic industrial smoke. The two words only affected are 'save...yourself' meaning by killing yourself, you are not only saving the planet, but you are saving yourself. This article is made to look very boring, the lack of pictures forced the audience to picture what they are being told. This is a direct mode of address so you feel that it is your fault and you are responsib
