Womens Mag Mock

Women are portrayed in a sexist way

Woman's magazine was a very popular magazine in the sixties and was produced by men, aimed at women.  It would include interviews with celebrities and help for the house wives of that era.  In this essay I will be writing about how women were portrayed in this magazine using the front cover and an article that was featured in this magazine to back up my point, my point being that women were represented in a very sexist way in todays standards.

The target audience for Woman magazine was white heterosexual women aged between 30-50.  The mes en scene of the purple on the cover has a symbolic code of elegance and daintiness,  which at the time, every woman had to be but, the background is a soft purple which also suggests that women at the time should be elegant but to the point where it puts all the attention on them.  The serif font is in the style of hand writing, symbolising the love and care gone into this magazine.  The sidebar has a quote from one of the biggest directors at the time specifically saying something that he is directing towards women, yet the 'special magic' depicts they have power over men or a power that men do not have, however, it is most likely something sexual and therefore shows that all men cared about no matter their status was one thing.  There is a symbolic code when talking about the kitchen, the fact that that is what takes up most of the front page suggests that that is the main thing that not only women car about, but where they spend most of their time so therefore would want to know how to to improve it not in just one way, but 7, this is an example of a household stereotype.  The rhetorical question asks the audience a personal question, to which they will say no to, and, therefore, read the mag to become the A-level beauty, this therefore functions as a proairetic code as it makes the reader take action over their appearance but this also functions as a hermeneutic code as it asks a question only the reader can answer and therefore the magazine knows the solution if the answer is no, however, it is asking a personal question about something as minute as are you happy with how you look, which only other people really care about, showing that woman at this time where targeted for their appearance and were expected to always have A-level beauty which is a stereotype but also a hegemonic law that women should always look their best.

The purpose of this article is to attract women to the products on offer specifically for the kitchen, this article also demonstrates that this magazine is targeting many audiences with the price range and therefore allowing no one to be out of buying what is to offer as the price range is friendly no matter what your income is✓.  The mid shot of a child and mother in the setting of a kitchen, symbolises a highly stereotypical image of what happens when the dad is work, his two loves making dinner for hen he is home, however, the child is a boy, making it slightly subversive but still showing what would be a familiar occurrence while the dad is it work. The quote saying  'It slots in easy so any girl can assemble it' is from the bottom B&W image, it is specifically saying that the readership is useless, 'get the man in your life to help'  assumes they can not do it alone or with the help of another woman and that they even have a man in their life in the first place, also the fact it is a man assumes that they are straight, they are being heteronormative as there is no reference to homosexuality.
