Genre and Intertextuality
Genre and Intertextuality
- Genre is a type of Media Product governed by implicit rules.
- The building blocks of genre are called (generic) Conventions/Paradons
- Atypical challenges conventions by not being associated to the norm (Subvert)
- Hybrid is a mix of two things
- Sub-genre is a genre within a genre
The paradigmatic aspects of the bats imply that they are evil as they are a vampires reincarnated self and therefore their best friend. They are shown as strong a veracious as they are attacking the women.
The most explicit horror paradigmatic is the blood dripping of the V which is shaped like the fang of a vampire.
The connotation of the low-key lighting is that things will lurk in the shadows and there is a mystery to the film.
The woman on the right with the dark hair is shown as atypical of women in horror films, example being the women on the left, due to her being bitten she is now a vampire.
The Women also appeal to men and Lesbians
The font resembles being made out of wood which is also the same material a stake is made from which also happens to be a Vampires weakness which is iconic to a classic horror film.

Star Treck🚀👽
Sci-fi genre, we knew this due to the vehicles they were travelling in, the sound of lasers, the mise en scene of the futuristic, sleek, militaristic costumes. The setting it was in, the presence of aliens, which is fundamentally exclusive to Sci-Fi.
Genre fluidity is how the genre changes throughout the years to fit the credentials of popularity of the time.
Media products are not realistic as they are based of stereotypes, so they can never be truly realistic.
Realistic❌ Verisimilitude✅
Steve Neale DID NOT INVENT GENRE!
One of the advantages of genre is the audience can find what they want. It also allows companies such as Netflix to target specific audiences, however there are some niché genres that some people will not be able to get. People also interpret things differently, someone's horror maybe another persons thriller. Steve Neale also believes that genre is essentially instances of 'repetition and differences'. He suggested that texts need to conform to some generic paradigms to be identified within a certain genre - but must also subvert these conventions in order to not appear identical.

Text = Media Product
This is a hybrid genre show.
The media language gets the audience up to speed on what's going on, using props, camera angles, costumes, lighting. Intertextuality is reading and looking into what links all these↑ to another text, it's one text that makes reference to another text.
Intertextuality is used for comedic affect as in the Simpsons there is references from films such as Clockwork orange and Citizen Kane, these references are used to satisfy the viewer as when they see these easter eggs also make the viewer seem clever and pleased with themselves. Intertextuality is also polysemic as if the kids have not seen it is is still funny for the children and due to them also making reference to Clock Work Orange, this a double mode of address as it is a mature film they rinse. when intertextuality is taking to it's extreme it is called a Parody.
Narrative - The way the way in which the story is told, not just through story but through costume, Mise-en-Scene, colour, ideology, editing, music, gestures and graphics
Tzvetan Todorov - Narrative Equilibrium. Equilibrium is a state of balance, it can be good or bad, just has to be normal
- Establishment of Equilibrium
- Disequilibrium (disruption), becomes unbalanced
- The Liminality Period is the state of where they know something is wrong
- They then set about restoring the disequilibrium
- Resolution as things go back to being balanced, not necessarily the same but balanced none the less
The advantage of this theory is that you can apply it to a whole lot of media products
